I have been and continue to be a fierce opponent of the politicization of climate science and passage of Carbon cap and trade legislation. In my fierce attacks against the IPCC scientists who are blaming humans for causing climate change, I have received comments from:
Scott A. Mandia
Professor of Physical Sciences, Asst. Chair
T-206 Smithtown Sciences Bldg., S.C.C.C.
533 College Rd., Selden, NY 11784
“High Standards Inspire Superior Performance”
Scott and I have engaged in a several email exchanges about the merits of global warming science and I valued his polite and persistent arguments that differ from my own. I’ve come to respect him and placed a link to his site under climate change. He believes that global warming is happening while I stubbornly disagree. I place his link here so that anyone who finds this blog can read and think about the issue from his point of view. Our link to Scott Mandia’s site is to provide some balance on the issue.
I wrote him recently and asked him to comment on Climate-gate. I will not share his private emails but I will share one of my own. In my email, I encouraged Scott to read the emails and ponder their significance, especially on the credibility of the scientists who wrote them. Though we differ on science, I respect Scott as a scientist, and thus far have no reason to question his scientific ethics. We exchanged eight emails. This is just one of the emails I sent him.
Scott,
When I was still in high school, the Washington Post published a series of stories about a burglary of Democrat offices at the Watergate. The inside story of the Nixon corruption was revealed by another questionable source, deep throat, and those stories proved to be true.
Republican Partisans could not believe a sitting president could have been involved in a cover-up of this magnitude and were in deep denial that his administration was deeply involved. Nixon obstructed justice and blocked investigation into the corrupt act of political espionage. For a very young Republican partisan, it was extremely difficult to read stories of their corruption, to learn about their web of lies and deceit. But I read those stories to learn the truth. It was devastating to listen to the 18 minute Whitehouse tapes demonstrating the Nixon corruption, but I listened.
I believe climate-gate is a very human story about power, ambition, money, greed, and political corruption, not just a story about science. It is a story of lies and deceit that taints genuine scientists with the same broad brush. Right now, the conservative press is painting all climate scientists with same brush of corruption as Republicans politicians were painted during Watergate. There was no fairness then and there will be no fairness now.
Deny these emails all you want but know this, ALL climate scientists have been discredited by the lies and deceit of a few. Now all climate research will be scrutinized for truthfulness, accuracy and political bias. Average citizens who read these stories in the popular press will question the ethics of All scientists, they will wonder if all scientists are telling lies based on their politics, not providing genuine science.
You seem like a decent and honorable fellow who believes his scientific evidence. Maybe it’s time you listen to the other side of the argument, no matter how painful. I’d encourage you to study the emails so you can evaluate their damming words for yourself. I am reading the articles on the links you suggested to be fair.
Regards,
Exile
My true love of science has always been about followng the debate between scientists, the very human quest of those seeking truth through experimentation, and following the debate between scientists as they study, hypothesize, test and prove their ideas. The scientists job is never done. Science is a competitive sport of the mind. Scientists should be skeptical of every new scientific theory and test that theory until they fully understand and can prove it right or wrong. I fully believe the debate is not finished on understanding the physics of climate.
Watergate taught me that Republicans were just as likely to become corrupted by power as Democrats. Watergate taught me to be less trusting of all politicians, to question their motives and methods. I don’t fully trust anyone to do as they say, until they demonstrate their ethics in some profound way. I judge them by their deeds, not their words.
Al Gore has made frequent appearances before Senate committees and friendly interviewers like Conan O’Brien announcing with confidence that scientists had reached a consensus on global warming, and there was no more room for debate. Al Gore preaches the gospel of environmental extremism, while he hypocritically lives with a huge carbon footprint.
In true scientific inquiry, the science is never settled. Each new generation of scientists test existing theories in their quest to better understand the world around us. Earth is a very complex place and frail humans are doing their best to understand it. Ethical science must honestly evaluate the data, and test their theories to prove their new theories. Climate-gate is as much a story about human ethics as it as about science. And the hacked emails indicate some climate scientists have lied about their data to push a predetermined conclusion. Climate-gate is a story about trust, trust in science breached by deceit and outright lies.
Every generation has the total belief in their own intellectual superiority. Climate-gate is also a story about arrogance. IPCC scientists believed they were smarter than all climate skeptics and lay people. They believe their ideas should rule. Kyoto and Copenhagen are about putting all of mankind under the yoke of a one world government ruled by scientists. Climate-gate reveals the web of lies used to impose a worldwide scheme to redistribute wealth, take away individual freedom and enable global tyranny.
Here’s Youtube slideshow preparred by What’s Up With That science blog which details the who’s who of the Climategate Scientists.

Cathy,
It has been a pleasure chatting with you via email. The fact that you have posted my link, even though you disagree with much of the content there, shows how open-minded and fair you are. Thank you. As I told you, I often get “hate email” when some folks come across my page and do not like the message I bring so our exchange was refreshing.
BTW, you are free to post anything I have said to you in my emails if you think it adds to the discussion. I stand by my comments and have no issue with the public reading them.
I ask you and your readers to take a look at one specific Web page that I have just recently posted that tries to explain why there is so much misinformation about global warming:
http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/mandias/global_warming/global_warming_misinformation_reasons.html
I think Reason #3 might make your readers take a pause. Granted, it is just one study, but it is illuminating and I can speak to the authors’ conclusions because I run into this attitude when I post on conservative-leaning blogs.
Finally, regarding ClimateGate: There are many scientists from many fields that have published data that show the effects of global warming and why humans are the primary drivers of this warming. These scientists include some of the obvious: climatologists, meteorologists, geologists, modelers, and oceanographers. Some less obvious include: biologists, marine biologists, zoologists, chemistry, astrophysics, economists, environmental politics, and others. I am quite confident that MANY of these folks have NEVER spoken to the CRU folks nor emailed them.

Scott - thanks for corresponding with Exile. Also I want to thank you for your polite comments on our blog. Likewise we often get comments that are rude or just plan ridiculous so it is refreshing to see thoughtful well though out post.
Exile - I was listening to two geologist who spoke on teh Rush Limbaugh show today - they were quite fascinating and I hope we get to hear them more in the future. Neither of them agree with the AGW science as well. Both said it was of course a natural cycle and the second geologist a woman was very interesting. She stated that you never come to a firm conclusion in science but only the best conclusion or hypothesis that cannot be disproven as of yet by any other hypothesis.

Although I am not a scientist, I am very much into politics……GW has been a hoax. Finally the email came out that the scientist are hiding the decline, what does that say????? All original data has been discarded……WHY???? so how can these scientists do anything without original data????? This is all about politics…..They are lying , cheating, deleting information to prove this is false……What other proof do you need???? These scientist just needs the funds to keep their jobs…..and that is it…..they need to find other things to analyze, like some medical advances or something……This is all about the government CONTROL…..you believers need to take your heads out of the sand and for just a moment, listen, and stop talking….
